In May of 2013, while at school at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, FL, Danny had a terrible accident and fell 4 stories off of the balcony of his dorm room. He sustained multiple serious injuries, including 5 broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a shattered pelvic/hip region... broken in more places than one could count. He since has had surgery in which they put screws and plates in his pelvis and hip bones. While we thank God that none of these injuries were life threatening, Danny still has a very long road to recovery. He is not able to put weight on his legs and will need extensive rehabilitation and physical therapy before attempting to walk again.
Dan's medical insurance was through his college. Due to his extensive injuries, the insurance was capped out in the first days of treatment. Though initially expected to be hospitalized and in rehab for a month, he was released after 10 days with an uninsured bill of well over 150K. He is now recovering at his cousin’s home in Tampa, Florida waiting until he is well enough to be transported back home to Lowell, MA, where he will begin his physical therapy and rehab.
We are hoping to raise money to help cover the expenses associated with his hospitalization and rehabilitation. Any contribution that you could provide, whether it be keeping him in your prayers, posting words of encouragement in the Guestbook, or a monetary gift, would be greatly appreciated and an enormous help towards Danny’s long and arduous recovery. He has been amazingly positive, which goes a long way. We'd like to thank all who have been so supportive and encouraging. Please know that 100% of all donations received will go directly towards Danny’s medical care and the ongoing costs of his recovery.
Danny is a great kid who has always been active in outdoor activities. As captain of his Lowell HS crew team, led the team to the National competition his senior year. During each of his summers of his college years, he worked with children at local YMCA camps. And while at college in Florida, he discovered a love for sailing. Our prayers for him is for a full recovery and a return back to a healthy and active life.
With much thanks and appreciation,
The Burke Family
